{"id":131,"date":"2003-07-07T07:13:18","date_gmt":"2003-07-07T13:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fantasist.net\/scroll\/?p=131"},"modified":"2003-07-07T07:13:18","modified_gmt":"2003-07-07T13:13:18","slug":"glosses-of-phrases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fantasist.net\/scroll\/index.php\/2003\/07\/07\/glosses-of-phrases\/","title":{"rendered":"Glosses of Phrases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been a little bit since I mentioned anything about conlanging, so I thought it was time.<\/p>\n<p>I was tooling around on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/gutenberg.net\/\">Project Gutenberg<\/a> the other day and came accross <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/gutenberg\/cgi-bin\/sdb\/cat.cgi\/cat.cgi?&#038;label=ID&#038;ftpsite=http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/gutenberg\/&#038;alpha=3840\">Mr. Honey&#8217;s Tourist Dictionary, English-German<\/a>.  At first, I thought it was just sort of interesting, but then, I started looking at it, and the other &#8220;Mr. Honey&#8217;s Dictionaries&#8221;.  Suddenly, it clicked!  What a great source for phrases to translate into a conlang!  I already have Conlang Phrasebooks, but here are even more ideas for phrases that people use in daily life.  In some of these, there is even generic or generalized technical jargon.  For instance, there&#8217;s the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/gutenberg\/cgi-bin\/sdb\/cat.cgi\/cat.cgi?&#038;label=ID&#038;ftpsite=http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/gutenberg\/&#038;alpha=3895\">Banking Dictionary<\/a>, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/gutenberg\/cgi-bin\/sdb\/cat.cgi\/cat.cgi?&#038;label=ID&#038;ftpsite=http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/gutenberg\/&#038;alpha=3844\">Insurance Dictionary<\/a>, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/gutenberg\/cgi-bin\/sdb\/cat.cgi\/cat.cgi?&#038;label=ID&#038;ftpsite=http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/gutenberg\/&#038;alpha=3838\">Large Business Dictionary<\/a>, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/gutenberg\/cgi-bin\/sdb\/cat.cgi\/cat.cgi?&#038;label=ID&#038;ftpsite=http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/gutenberg\/&#038;alpha=3842\">Small Business Dictionary <\/a>and even the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/gutenberg\/cgi-bin\/sdb\/cat.cgi\/cat.cgi?&#038;label=ID&#038;ftpsite=http:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/gutenberg\/&#038;alpha=3834\">Workstudy Dictionary<\/a>.<br \/>\nIn any case, these all really sparked some ideas about how language is used and what really goes into a real, fully-formed language with complete vocabulary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been a little bit since I mentioned anything about conlanging, so I thought it was time.
