{"id":632,"date":"2006-11-21T19:19:02","date_gmt":"2006-11-22T01:19:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fantasist.net\/scroll\/?p=632"},"modified":"2006-11-21T15:22:36","modified_gmt":"2006-11-21T21:22:36","slug":"magna-carta-two","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fantasist.net\/scroll\/index.php\/2006\/11\/21\/magna-carta-two\/","title":{"rendered":"Magna Carta Two"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I mentioned in a previous post, here&#8217;s my Magna Carta II.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, again, just in case you jumpped in here at the last minute and haven&#8217;t read anything else, Chris Baty talked about two Magna Cartas of noveling in his NaNoWriMo primer <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html%3FASIN=0811845052%26tag=fantasistnet%26lcode=xm2%26cID=2025%26ccmID=165953%26location=\/o\/ASIN\/0811845052%253FSubscriptionId=0EMV44A9A5YT1RVDGZ82\">No Plot No Problem<\/a>. The first is all the things I think go into a good novel. (That&#8217;s what the last post was.) And the second is the list of all the things that I think should be definately left out of a good novel. (That&#8217;s what this one is.)<\/p>\n<p>So, without further ado, here&#8217;s my Magna Carta II, Elements of &#8220;Bad&#8221; Fiction:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trick, &#8220;O&#8217;Henry&#8221; endings<\/li>\n<li>Characters who do consistently stupid things and never learn<\/li>\n<li>Info dumps<\/li>\n<li>Characters who preach<\/li>\n<li>No action or plot movement<\/li>\n<li>Wooden characters without any background or substance<\/li>\n<li>Mysteries that can only be solved with information\/clues not given in the story ala &#8220;Murder She Wrote&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Not enough description<\/li>\n<li>Too much description, especially with florid prose<\/li>\n<li>No one \tworking or trying to make a living<\/li>\n<li>No conflict based in responsibility to a real life<\/li>\n<li>Magic that doesn&#8217;t follow rules or has too many loopholes<\/li>\n<li>Not enough explanation of how magic works<\/li>\n<li>Inconsistent characters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sadly, with so few days left and so many words to catch up, I doubt this will ever shape up into an actual novel, especially since I&#8217;m so strapped for time, that I&#8217;m stealing posts from my other blog, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ryumaou.com\/hoffman\/netgeek\/\">Diary of a Network Geek<\/a>.
