You may have noticed this blog dying a slow death.

There’s a reason I haven’t been posting much here, besides author birthdays, lately.  Beyond the fact that I’ve been battling cancer, this site has grown in a chaotic way and in directions I did not intend.  What’s more, the name no longer describes what I intend for my creative endeavors.  I feel limited by the name, Fantasist.net, to, well, fantasy.  But, even here, there is a fair amount of science-fiction, too.  And, I don’t want to be limited to either genre.  So, I’m brainstorming a new domain name and I’ll eventually set up a new site, with a new look, that’s less restrictive in nature.

In the meantime, I’ll keep posting writer’s birthdays, but not much else.

Just in time for werewolf season.
Ha! I’m kidding about that. There is no werewolf season! You can shoot them anytime. But, only if you have a silver bullet. Not exactlly something you can pick up at the local gun store. So, what’s a would-be werewolf kilelr to do? Make your own!

Actually, you may be prosecuted for murder even if you CAN prove you shot a werewolf. Even lycanthropes have rights!)

You may have noticed a change here at Fantasist.net.

Namely, the fact that there are now advertisements. Well, frankly, it just can’t be helped anymore. So far, in over five years of having this site, less than ten people have bought books from my Amazon.com store, no one has bought anything from the CafePress store, no one has bought anything for me from my Wishlist and no one has donated any money. It’s not cheap to run the place and costs keep going up, so I finally decided that I had to host some small ads. Hopefully, they’re not too intrusive, but they’re here to stay. I may move them around some, but I’m fairly certain that I’ll always have them from now on.
I actually got the idea from Langmaker.com, run by Jeff Henning. He has a few, very tasteful, ads on the side of his site now. And, knowing what I know about the web and costs and such, I don’t begrudge him any of the tiny revenue he must take in from it.

So, now you know.

A “do-it-yourself” Rosetta stone!

For those of you who are already familiar with my conlang resources, you know that they’re mostly based on scripts originally written by Chris Pound. Well, one of the scripts he wrote was to automatically transliterate a text into a more or less realistic conlang text that’s generated on the fly. Sounds fun, right? Well, now you can do it on the web with Fantasist.net’s Rosetta Stone Game! Using the same principles and source files as the Conlang Word Generator and the Name Maker, you can make your very own, original Rosetta Stone to “decrypt”.

Okay, so maybe this is only fun for linguistics and conlang geeks, but still, it’s Friday, so lighten up and have fun with it.

And, now you can, too, with the Fantasist.net Fantasy Pocket “Litter” Generator. It’s pretty simple to use: just check the boxes that correspond with the categories that you want to generate random items in and click the button. The result is a list of what a character in a fantasy setting might be carrying in its pockets. Suitable for fiction, role-playing games, or just for fun.
The generator is a fairly simple idea that was inspired by Picked Pockets designed by Wraith Systems Labs. Their’s was built in Visual Basic, or Visual C++, but this is web-based and will work for anyone with a browser.

Well, for those of you who noticed, or cared, we’ve moved to a new home!

That’s right, Fantasist.net has changed ISPs, more or less successfully! Yea! It took a little doing, but I think it was worth it. Certainly, MovableType was easy enough to move. I can’t say enough about how relieved I am in that regard. It’s really a great product. I’m glad I chose it as my WebLog.

Well, I’ve been a busy bee this week. I have a couple of updates, both on and off Fantasist.net.

On this site, I’ve updated the Cartography page. I added in a neat map that illustrates an idea I had for a world creation myth. I imagined a god stamping out evil, in a way, by smashing the chief evil spirit into the world-covering ocean. Where the god’s hand pressed into the ocean floor, mud stuck to his hand and was pulled up through the ocean to form continents and islands. Then, the evil spirit tried to force his way back into the world, forming a volcano. So, to keep the source of all evil in check, the god creates human kind to guard over the breach in the world. In response to that, the source of evil creates his own race to fight the humans. Viola! A creation myth for a fantasy world!
In any case, to illustrate that, I did up a map. It’s free of any labels, but the basic idea is pretty well displayed. The map and idea, incidentally, were inspired by the cover of a game called Kahuna, which is a strategy card-game set in a fictional Hawaii.

Off this site, I have posted two constructed language templates. They’re geared toward creating phrasebooks for a conlang. The first, which I actually did some time ago, is a sort of “phrasebook for tourists”. It covers all the basics like simple greetings, small-talk, how to order in a restaurant, and getting directions. All the kinds of things one might find in a tourist guidebook.
The second phrasebook is meant to jumpstart some ideas about slang in a conlang. Of course, slang is very culturally specific, but I threw out some fun ideas. I hit things like street “jive”, cool vs. uncool, gambling and crime, and sex. Believe it or not, most conlangs don’t actually seem to include stuff like that. I guess because most of us take an acedemic approach. So, I laid out some basic topics, suggested a meaning, added in a literal translation and left a blank for a conlang translation. We’ll see what the reaction is, if there is any reaction at all.
The files have been posted to the Yahoo!Groups LangMaker2 list, which is available here. Unfortunately, you will have to sign up for Yahoo!Groups, and the LangMaker2 Group itself, to get the files. Eventually, I’ll put up conlang page here on Fantasist.net and post them for download there.
