Bearing One’s Own Child

Something just seems wrong about that to me.

According to this story on Wired News, scientists have successfully cloned a horse and that same horse carried the fetus to term. So, in essence, the horse gave birth to its own sister. As I mentioned at the top of this entry, there’s something about this that’s unsettling to me. I really think we’re going a bit far with this cloning technology. I admit that I really liked it when we were talking about bringing back extinct animals, but we get this kind of stuff along with the “good” stuff. It really makes me wonder where it will all end up.
Cloning, of course, has been a theme in science-fiction for quite some time. Both the good and bad aspects of it have been looked at in detail, but there’s always room for more stories. Will we eventually clone soldiers so we don’t have to send “real” humans into battle? Will we ever clone extinct animals, like dinosaurs and the marsupial wolf? Will we clone people to harvest the body parts for transplants? These are just some of the topics that have been covered, in varying detail, in science-fiction already. Mostly, these are cautionary tales and, I think that’s a wise and telling statement from the writers.

Bamboo Bicycle

The ultimate “green” vehicle!

Yep, you read right, it’s a bicycle made out of bamboo. According to this page on the American Bamboo Society’s website, there’s a Brazillian in Christiana, which is in Copenhagen, who’s making bicycles out of bamboo. And, according to the article, they seem quite popular, too!
Have fun with it.

Niven’s News

Larry Niven, that is.

One of my favorite Niven creations is in the news, after a fashion. Larry Niven, who resembles my father in law, incidentally, came up with the fascinating concept of “organ legging”. What that means is, essential, a black market for bootleg organs brought about as a result of demand that got out of control.
Now, in this article on YahooNews, they’re talking about organ legging, without actually mentioning it, but in the sense of preventing it. Frankly, the mere fact that someone is concerned enough to consider it’s prevention makes me shudder. That has to mean that someone has either tried it, or seriously considered it in a very real sense. Either way, it’s pretty freaky!

Consider what the world would be like if such a thing came to pass? What are all the implications?

Sailing to the Stars

Well, it might be more science-fiction than science…

At least, according to this article on Wired News, there are some people who doubt that solar sails will work. We’ll know soon, though, if the scientists behind Cosmos 1 are able to launch.
Solar sails have long been a science-fiction staple as a “real” way that we might get to other planets. Interstellar travel is sort of the “Holy Grail” of science-fiction and all the world’s space programs, as well. Luminaries such as Larry Niven have written about solar sails, but now we’re close to the reality of it. Of course, I doubt that I’ll live to see a solar sail take people to another planet even in our solar system, but stranger things have happened!
Anyhow, enjoy the article and the speculations.

The Book of Origins

The moon is Waxing Gibbous

1:1 In the beginning, there was nothing but God.
1:2 The Great Void was without form and concealed in Darkness.
1:3 And God said, “Light” and He burned as a great Flame.
1:4 And God was pleased with the Light and made it separate from the Darkness.
1:5 And God called the Light “Day” and the Darkness “Night”. Thus was the First Day.
1:6 And in the Light, God caused a firmament to be brought forth from the Waters.
1:7 Then did God divide the firmament in two parts. One part he raised above the other, and this he called Paradise.
1:8 From the Light of Paradise did God cast his Shadow across the firmament. Thus ended the Second Day.
1:9 God said, “Let the Water under Paradise be gathered into one place and let the dry Earth appear”, and it was so.
1:10 And God’s Shadow said to him, “What have you made here? Let us bring forth Life that may pay us heed.”
1:11 And God said to the Shadow, “Let us call forth Life from the Light of Paradise to praise our work.”
1:12 And God said, “Let the Earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after its kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the Earth”, and it was so.
1:13 Thus ended the Third Day.
1:14 And God said, “Let there be a Great Light that burns as Flame to rule the Day and Illumine my work”, and it was so.
1:15 And God’s Shadow said, “Let there also be a Lesser Light that Shines in the Night that nothing remain hidden in Darkness”, and it was so.
1:16 Then, God set the Lights, Greater and Lesser, into the firmament and Commanded them in their Paths.
1:17 And God saw His Creations Illuminated in the Day and the Night, and it was good.
1:18 Thus ended the Fourth Day
1:19 And God’s Shadow said, “Let us Create Life that moves in the Light and the Darkness.”
1:20 And God said, “Let the Waters bring forth the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the Earth.
1:21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the Waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after their kind: and God saw that it was good.
1:22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the Waters in the Seas, and let fowl multiply on the Earth.”
1:23 Thus ended the Fifth Day.
1:24 And God said, “Let the Earth bring forth the living creature after its kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the Earth after its kind”, and it was so.
1:25 And God made the Beasts of the Earth after its kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creeps upon the Earth after its kind: and God saw that it was good, as did God’s Shadow.
1:26 And God’s Shadow said, “Let us make Mankind in Our image, after Our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the Air, and over the cattle, and over all the Earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the Earth. ”
1:27 So God created Mankind in His Own image; Male and Female He created them.
1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and enrich the Earth, and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the Air, and over every living thing that moves upon the Earth.”
1:29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the Earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
1:30 And to every beast of the Earth, and to every fowl of the Air, and to every thing that creeps upon the Earth, where there is Life, I have given every green herb for meat”, and it was so.
1:31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, it was very good. Thus ended the Sixth Day.

2:1 Thus the Heavens and the Earth were finished.
2:2 And on the seventh day God ended His work; and He rested on the Seventh Day from all His work.
2:3 And God blessed the Seventh Day, and sanctified it, because on that Day He had rested from all His work.
2:4 But, though the Heavens and Earth were created,
2:5 And every plant of the field before them was in the Earth, and every herb of the field before it grew, for God had not caused it to rain upon the Earth, and mankind did not yet know to till the ground.
2:6 But there went up a mist from the Earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
2:7 And formed the first of mankind of the dust of the firmament, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and he became a living soul.
2:8 And God planted a Garden in the East; and there He put the man whom he Had formed.
2:9 And out of the ground God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the Tree of Life also in the midst of the Garden, and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
2:10 And a river went out of the Garden to water the God’s work.
2:11 And God took the man, and put him into the Garden of the East to tend it and to keep it.
2:12 Then, God’s Shadow said to Him, “Let the man live eternally in peace, safe from the Knowledge of Good and Evil.”
2:13 And, God agreed, saying, “Surely, if they taste of that Tree, they will know Pain and Death.”
2:14 So, God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat:
2:15 But of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, you will not eat, for in the Day that you eat from it, you will surely die. ”
2:16 And the Shadow of God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone.”
2:17 Then, God said, “I will make him an help mate for him.”
2:18 And the Shadow of God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept: and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh again;
2:19 And the rib, which the Shadow of God had taken from man, God made into a woman, and brought her to the man.
2:20 And the man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh”
2:21 And the Shadow of God said, “She shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
2:22 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
2:23 And they were both naked, the man and the woman, and were not ashamed.
2:24 Then, God brought every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air, unto the man and woman to see what he would call them: and whatsoever they called every living creature, that was their name ever after.
2:25 And they gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but the Shadow of God hid some creatures from them.

3:1 Now the Shadow of God was more subtle than any beast of the field which God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God told you that you should not eat of every tree of the garden?”
3:2 And the woman said to the Shadow, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3:3 But the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has forbidden us, lest we die.”
3:4 And the Shadow said to the woman, “Surely you would not die: For God knows that the day you eat the fruit, your eyes will be opened.
3:5 And you will be as We are: knowing Good and Evil.”
3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired if one wished wisdom, she took the fruit, and she did eat.
3:7 And she also gave the fruit to her husband that he might be wise with her; and he did eat.
3:8 And their eyes were opened, and they knew that they were naked;
3:9 and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
3:10 And they heard the voice of God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and the man and his wife hid themselves from God among the trees of the garden.
3:11 And God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”
3:12 And the man said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.”
3:13 And God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten the fruit of the tree, which I commanded you not to eat?”
3:14 And the man said, “The woman who you made to be with me, she gave me the fruit, and I did eat.”
3:15 And God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” And the woman said, “The Shadow beguiled me, and I did eat.”
3:16 And God said to the Shadow, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above every beast of the field; upon your belly will you go, and dust will you eat for the rest of days:
3:17 And I will put hate between you and mankind, and between your dominion and theirs.”
3:18 To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and conception; in sorrow you will bring forth children; and your desire will be to your husband, and he will have dominion over you.”
3:19 And to the man He said, “Because you have chosen your wife’s commands over mine, and have eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you not to eat: cursed is the ground for your sake; in sorrow will you eat of it all the days of your life;
3:20 Thorns and thistles will it bring forth to you; and you will eat the herbs of the field;
3:21 In the sweat of your face will you eat bread, until you return to the firmament; for out of it were you taken: for you are dust, and to dust you will return.”
3:22 The man called his wife’s name Eve; which means The Mother of All Living. And the woman called her husband’s name Adam; which means Father of All Living.
3:23 To Adam and to his wife God made coats of skins, and clothed them.
3:24 And God said, “Behold, the man has become as one of us, knowing good and evil: and now, let him not reach out, and also take the fruit of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
3:25 So God sent them out from the Garden of the East, to till the ground.
3:26 So He drove out the man and woman; and He placed at the East of the Garden Angels, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to protect the way of the tree of life.

4:1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, bore a son who she called Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man from God.”
4:2 And she again bore his brother, who she called Abel. And Abel means “a keeper of sheep”, but Cain means “the reaper” and he was a tiller of the ground.
4:3 And in the fullness of time it came to pass, that Cain brought the fruit of the ground as an offering to God.
4:4 And Abel also brought of the first of his flock. And God had respect for Abel and his offering:
4:5 But for Cain and his offering he had no respect. And Cain was heavy of heart, and his countenance fell.
4:6 And the Shadow of God said to Cain, “Why has you countenance fallen?
4:7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? and if you do not well, Sin lies at the door. And to you shall be his desire, and you will rule over him.”
4:8 Then Cain talked with Abel his brother: and, when they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
4:9 And God said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And Cain said, “I do not know: Am I my brother’s keeper?”
4:10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me.
4:11 And now are you cursed on Earth, which has opened her mouth to receive you brother’s blood from your hand;
4:12 When you till the ground, it will no longer yield to you her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond will you be on the earth.
4:13 And Cain said unto God, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
4:14 Behold, you have driven me out from the face of the Earth; and from your face will I hide; and I will be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth; and every one that finds me will slay me.”
4:15 And God said to him, “Whoever slays Cain will suffer My vengeance sevenfold.” And the Shadow of God set a mark on Cain, so that any finding him would know not to kill him.
4:16 And Cain left the presence of God, and went to live in the Land East of Eden.
4:17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bore Enoch, which means “he who knows”: and Cain built a city, and called it, Enoch, after his son.
4:18 And to Enoch were born many children and grandchildren.
4:19 And Enoch’s sons were: Jabal, who was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.
4:20 And his brother’s name was Jubal, who was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
4:21 And also Tubalcain, who was an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron:
4:22 and his sister was Naamah.
4:23 And Lamech, who was also a son of Enoch, said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, “Hear my voice; listen to my speech: for I, too, have slain a man to my shame, and a young man to my hurt.”
4:24 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bore a son, who she called Seth: “For God,” said she, “has appointed me another seed instead of Abel, who was murdered by Cain.”
4:25 And to Seth was born a son; who was called Enos: then did mankind begin to call upon the name of God.

5:1 And it came to pass, when mankind began to multiply on the face of the Earth, and children were born to them,
5:2 That the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair; and they took wives which they chose.
5:3 And God said, “My spirit shall not always strive with man, because he is also flesh: but his days will be numbered no more than a hundred and twenty years.”
5:4 There were Giants on the Earth in those days; and also after, when the sons of God knew the daughters of men, and they bore children to them, the same became mighty men of old, men of renown.
5:5 And God saw that the Shadow of God, known as the Adversary, inspired wickedness in mankind, and that every imagination and thought of his heart was only evil.
5:6 And it saddened God that He had made mankind on the earth, and it grieved him in his heart.
5:7 And God said, “I will destroy man who I created from the firmament; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it saddens me that I have made them.”
5:8 But Noah, who was a child of Adam, found grace in the eyes of God.
5:9 Noah was a just man and walked with God.
5:10 And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
5:11 The Earth was corrupt before God, and was filled with violence.
5:12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
5:13 And God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh is coming because the Earth is filled with violence through the flesh; and, behold, I will destroy the wicked with the Earth.
5:14 Make an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark, and seal it inside and out with pitch.
5:15 And this will be the dimensions of it: The length of the ark will be three hundred lengths, the breadth of it fifty lengths, and the height of it thirty lengths.
5:16 A window you will make in the ark, and a length will you finish it above; and you will set the door in the side of the ark; with lower, second, and third stories you will make it.
5:17 And, behold, I will bring a flood of waters on the Earth, to destroy all flesh, where there is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is on the Earth shall die.
5:18 But with you will I make my covenant; and you will enter into the ark, and your sons, and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.
5:19 And of every living thing, you will bring two into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they will be male and female.
5:20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing on the Earth after its kind, two of every sort will come to you, to keep them alive.
5:21 And take some of all food that is eaten, and gather it to you; and it will be for food for you, and your family.”
5:22 So, Noah, being obedient to God, did as he was asked.

6:1 And God said to Noah, “Come into the ark and bring all your house; for you alone have been righteous in my sight in this generation.
6:2 Of every clean animal you will take groups of sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean, take only two, the male and his female.
6:3 Of fowls of the air, also take in groups of sevens, the male and the female; to keep their seed alive on the Earth.
6:4 In seven days, I will cause it to rain on the Earth forty days and forty nights; and every living thing that I have made, I will destroy.”
6:5 And Noah did what God commanded him.
6:6 And Noah was already an old man when the flood came on the Earth.
6:7 And Noah went in the ark, and brought his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him, because flood waters had started to rise.
6:8 There went into the ark two of every beast, clean and unclean, and every fowl and every thing that creeps on the Earth, the male and the female, as God commanded Noah.
6:9 And also, two of every kind that the Sons of Adam held no Dominion over, as guided by the Shadow of God, known as the Adversary.
6:10 And they who went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and He shut him in.
6:11 And, after seven days, the waters of the flood were on the Earth.
6:12 In the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
6:13 And it rained on the Earth for forty days and forty nights and the waters increased, and lifted the ark up above the Earth.
6:14 And the flood waters prevailed, and increased greatly over the Earth; and the ark sailed on the face of the waters.
6:15 And the waters increased even more over the earth so that all the high hills, and everything that is under Heaven, was covered.
6:16 Fifteen lengths upward the waters continued until the mountains were covered.
6:17 And all things of flesh died on the earth, both fowl, and cattle, and beast, and every creeping thing that creeps on the Earth, and every person:
6:18 All in whose nostrils breathed the breath of life, and all that was on the dry land, died.
6:19 And every living substance was washed from the face of the ground, both mankind, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl; and they were all destroyed: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were in the ark.
6:20 And the Waters prevailed over the Earth an hundred and fifty days.

7:1 But God remembered Noah, and every living thing with him in the ark: and God made a wind pass over the Earth, and the Waters abated;
7:2 The fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were both stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;
7:3 And after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters abated enough that the Adversary brought a mountain topped with fire from the Earth through the Waters.
7:4 And in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark came to rest upon the Mountains of the Adversary.
7:5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month.
7:6 In the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the Dominion of the Adversary were called from the ark to serve the Darkness.
7:7 And, at the end of forty days, Noah opened the window of the ark which he made:
7:8 And he sent out a raven, which went flew until the Waters were dried up from the Earth.
7:9 Then the Adversary put out his hand, and took her, and pulled her to him in the Fiery Darkness.
7:10 Then God, in His rage, struck the Adversary, driving him deep into his mountain of fire.
7:11 And God said, “Here you will stay, held in the Fiery Darkness, having Dominion over only those that come to you of their own free will.”
7:12 Then Noah sent out a dove, to see if the waters were dried from the face of the ground;
7:13 But the dove found no rest, and she returned to him in the ark, because the Waters were still on the face of the whole Earth.
7:14 And in another seven days he sent the dove out of the ark;
7:15 And the dove came back to him in the evening holding in her mouth an olive leaf: so Noah knew that the Waters had dried from off the Earth.
7:16 But he stayed another seven days; and sent the dove out again, but she did not return again.
7:17 And so in the first day of the first month of the six hundredth and first year, the Waters were dried from off the Earth.
7:18 And God spoke to Noah, saying,
7:19 “Go out of the ark, and take your wife and family.
7:20 Bring with you every living thing that is on the ark, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of every creeping thing that creeps on the Earth, so that they may breed abundantly on the Earth, and be fruitful, and multiply.
7:21 So Noah went out onto the Earth with his family,
7:22 And they took with them every living thing that had been on the ark.
7:23 And Noah built an altar to God; and took a measure of every clean thing that had survived, and made them burnt offerings on the altar.
7:24 And God smelled the sweet scent; and He said, “I will not curse the ground again, for mankind’s sake; for the imagination of mankind’s heart is evil even in their youth; nor will I smite any more every thing living, as I have done.”
7:25 While the Earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night will not end.

8:1 And God blessed Noah and his family, and said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, and replenish the Earth.
8:2 And the fear of you will be on every beast of the Earth, on every fowl of the Air, and on all that moves on the Earth, or on all the fishes of the Sea; into your hand are they delivered.
8:3 Every moving thing that lives will be food for you; and even the green herbs have I given you.
8:4 But flesh which moves with your own life, which is your blood, you will not eat.
8:5 And the blood of your lives I will require; at the hand of every beast I will require it, and at the hand of mankind; at the hand of everyone’s kin I will require the life of mankind.
8:6 Whoever sheds mankind’s blood, by mankind will their blood also be shed: for He made mankind in the image of God.
8:7 And you, be fruitful, and multiply; bring everything forth abundantly on the Earth, and multiply there.”
8:8 And then God spoke to Noah, and to his sons with him, saying,
8:9 “Behold, I establish My covenant with you, and with your kin after you;
8:10 And with every living creature that is with you on the Earth.
8:11 And My covenant with you is this; all flesh will not be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither will a flood again destroy the Earth.”
8:12 And God said, “This is the token of the covenant which I make between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for eternity:
8:13 I set My bow in the cloud, and it will be a token of the covenant between Me and the Earth.
8:14 And when I bring a cloud over the Earth, the bow shall be seen in the cloud:
8:15 And I will remember My covenant and the Waters will not become a flood to destroy all life.”
8:16 And God said to Noah, “This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between Me and your kin and their dominion on the Earth.”
8:17 The sons of Noah were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth and before them was the whole Earth spread.
8:18 And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:
8:19 And he drank wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.
8:20 When Ham saw his father’s nakedness, he told his two brothers.
8:21 Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered their father’s nakedness; but their faces were backward so they did not see their father’s nakedness.
8:22 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.
8:23 And he said, “Cursed be the kin of Ham; a servant of servants will they be for their kin.”
8:24 And he said, “Let God bless Shem and his kin; and let the kin of Ham shall be their servants.
8:25 Let God enrich Japheth and his kin, and they will dwell in the tents of Shem; and the kin of Ham will be their servants.

9:1 And the whole earth spoke one language, and everyone spoke one speech.
9:2 And as they journeyed from the East, they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they lived there.
9:3 And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks.” And they had brick for stone, and slime for mortar.
9:4 And the Adversary said, “Come, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach to Heaven; and let us all take one name, or else we will be scattered across the face of the whole Earth.
9:5 And God came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built.
9:6 And God said, “Behold, the people are one, and they all have one language; and they begin to think they rival Us: and now nothing will seem impossible to them, which they may imagine to do.
9:7 We will go down, and there confound their language, that they cannot understand one another’s speech.”
9:8 So God scattered them across the face of all the Earth: and they were unable to finish building the city.
9:9 Therefore the city became know as Babel; because God did confound the language of all the Earth there: and from there God did scatter them abroad on the face of all the Earth.

It may be small, but it doesn’t need gas!

So, what’s the big news, you say? Well, for starters, it has “normal” pickup and speeds. Not to mention decent drive distance before recharging. It’s kind of funny looking and it only seats two, but it’s tiny. Really, it’s a pretty cool concept. Comparable, I think, to the Mini-Cooper. Only more fuel effiecient.
Read all about it at the Pacific Northwest.
